About Sheldon
I am Sheldon ‘Salute’ Cottrell (or Cotterell if you’re checking my driver’s licence) from Kingston, Jamaica. As a member of the Jamaican Defence Force for over 10 years and from the age of 18 I hold the values of the military highly. I also respect the sacrifice that men and women across the world make for their country. There are many ways to serve your country and now as a cricketer for the West Indies I wish to represent my colleagues in the J.D.F when I take a wicket or make a catch…
My salute is a way of remembering the Jamaican Defence Force in celebration. A military march and salute are part of the army culture and when I take the field for my team I will continue to demonstrate this respect. During the 2019 World Cup my salute caught the attention of children from South Africa, India, UK to Pakistan and it is a privilege to think my actions might inspire youth. I hope to continue to encourage young people to enjoy the game of cricket and to achieve their dreams as I have.
